I read this and wanted to cry. Is such a shame that Christians, no matter what their conviction could act in such a manner? It reminds me of the scripture that says:
The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
It would have been so much more fruitful if these hard-core bible thumpers would have allowed the Spirit of Jesus to prevail.
I honestly cannot believe that Christians can keep themselves busy with such nonsense, and I honestly don’t know why Chalke even had to defend his position to such a hostile rigid fundamentalist crowd.

I think what you may be missing here (though I may be wrong!) is that the reporter may not be correctly judging the mood. If he had prejudices to start with then he may see passionate opposition to Chalke et al as judgementalism.
Jealousy for the truth (that is the biblical kind of jealousy, not the 21st cent psychobabbly I’ve-been-hurt-and-I-don’t-like-it kind of jealousy) is allowed to be passionate. Paul showed it in Galatians 1.
