Having recently read Flavel’s The Mystery of Providence and as one who often feels that preaching week by week seems to bear little fruit this comment by Mark Dever is a great encouragement. Imagine reflecting on a sermon you heard 85 years before and then being converted by it! Indeed, God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform.

I’m sure I’ve heard this story before, but the preacher was George Whitefield (and the 100+ farmer had only ever heard Whitefield preach once)…
I now feel less encouraged by this story because doubt has come into my mind over its veracity, as it seems to have multiple versions!
(Of course it’s possible that both are true…)
Hmm. Thanks for this. One tends to assume that stories are well researched by writers, however it may not always be the case. I think there is likely to be a root of truth in both. Who knows it may be the same root in each case!
